The Second Annual Bull City Metal Fest, brought to you in part by WXDU, is happening the weekend of February 3rd and 4th at the Casbah.  We'll be giving away tickets to the fest during our weekly meatl show "Beyond Good and Evil," Saturday evenings from 6-8pm. This year's line-up:

K Records was founded by Calvin Johnson (Beat Happening, Go Team, Dub Narcotic Sound System) in 1982 in Olympia, Washington. Incorporating the anti-corporate stance and DIY ethic of punk rock, K Records grew from a cassette-only label dedicated to releasing compilations of Olympia bands into a reknowned purveyor of independent pop music that transformed the sound of college radio. The K Records sound helped to make the Pacific Northwest into a Mecca for independent musicians and laid the foundations for Sub Pop, Kill Rock Stars, grunge, and modern indie-pop. Tune in to WXDU 88.7FM from 8-10pm tonight to hear the story of K Records: exploding the teenage underground into passionate revolt against the corporate ogre since 1982.

And stayed tuned afterwards for Nobody's Driving from 10-11pm for the best and weirdest of Pacific Northwest punk and hardcore!

Santa Salsera hosts Mondo Mundo this week with an African music special, featuring in-studio guest Will Ridenour. Will is a local musician and African music aficianado, just back from touring in Senegal and Mali with his bandmates in the Carrboro-based, West African dance band, Diali Cissokho and Kairaba. We'll hear a sneak preview from the band's upcoming debut album, as well as tales from their trip, and lots of great African music from Will's personal collection!

At the end of every year, WXDU compiles its Top 100 Albums and Top 20 compilations through the unbiased and highly scientific* process of counting the albums and comps that were played the most by our DJs. Nurse that New Year's Day hangover with WXDU as we countdown our annual Top 100 Albums of 2011, all day Sunday!  Starting at 10AM, WXDU DJ's will be playing songs from our 100 most played albums of the year & chatting about the results.   This year's list is a healthy mix of local music, indie rock, CBGF (Country-Bluegrass-Folk), R&B/Soul, Electronic & World music that'll be sure to give you an idea of what 2011 sounded like to us.

Marc Ribot will have the sign-off song.

Tune in on Sunday 12/16 on the new time slot for ILYB, 8 pm, for the Dex Romweber Duo! Dex & Sara have just come off a lot of touring (including opening up for the Meat Puppets - no kidding!) to promote their latest CD, "Is That You In the Blue?" It'll be interesting... 

During the mid-to-late 1970s disaffected European psych-rock musicians, inspired by the music of Arnold Schoenberg, Kurt Weill, Sun Ra, Olivier Messiaen, and Soft Machine, as well as by the politics of the radical left, formed a loose collective of bands that came to be known as the Rock in Opposition movement. Spearheaded by bands like the UK's Henry Cow and Belgium's Univers Zero, the movement produced dense, challenging, and at times startlingly beautiful music that used surreal and dadaist lyrics to advance a message of anti-fascim, anti-capitalism, and anti-consumerism. Tune into Polyphonic Perversity tomorrow from noon to 2pm to listen to the music of Rock in Opposition movement and the musicians that continue to uphold the tradition today.

Hey WXDU listeners! Come to the 7th annual FDDF (funk disco dance Friday) Throwdown at Wheels next Friday, Dec. 9 from 10pm-1am!

You'll be skating all night while DJs Viva, Stephen Conrad, Matt Tauch, and Nate Smith bring us the tunes to boogy on the skate floor.

There will be a bus shuttling attendees from Duke East Campus to Wheels from 10pm to 1am, so there's no need to drive.

This event will be FREE to those with a Duke ID, and $5 to those without. Skate rental is included!
