Three Lobed Recordings and WXDU are excited to bring you the latest installment in our Hopscotch Music Festival
Tune in Saturday (12/14) for a special broadcast of the massive, seven hour release Daughter of Darkness by Natural Snow Buildings. This recording was originally released as a limited-run, six cassette box set in 2009. Earlier this year, Ba Da Bing! Records released box sets in CD and LP formats of these mostly side-long drones. Natural Snow Buildings is a French duo consisting of Mehdi Ameziane and Solange Gularte. Here's a great introduction to the band published earlier this year in The Out Door.
Starting at 9am, we will play Daughter of Darkness in it's entirety with minimal station interruptions. We also plan to play a bonus track originally found on the Daughter of Darkness V release.
In October of 1983, Duke University’s AM radio station flipped over to FM with the broadcast of David Bowie’s “Station to Station,” and marked the birth of WXDU - 88.7. Celebrating 30 years of broadcasting, WXDU is throwing a party at the Duke Coffeehouse on Saturday, November 9th. A testament to the lively interplay between WXDU and the wider community, organizers say several old Triangle bands are reuniting for the show. The line-up features long time members of the WXDU staff and many supporters of the station.

CALVIN JOHNSON:
"Based in Olympia, Wash., Calvin Johnson‘s work in underground culture started as a teenage fan volunteering at the local community radio station, KAOS-FM. He moved on to writing for fanzines, organizing music and film events, playing music in various ill-fated bands. Calvin established K, a locally oriented media outlet, in 1982.
In 1993 Calvin founded Dub Narcotic Studio in which he has documented the work of the Somehow Is and Never Was, such as Mirah, the Blow, Versus, Built to Spill, Fitz of Depression, Make-Up and Little Wings. It has also been the incubator of many Calvin experiments in collaboration and self-expression, such as Beat Happening, Halo Benders, Dub Narcotic Sound System, and Selector Dub Narcotic.
The decade of the double zeroes saw Calvin Johnson set into the world, acoustic guitar in hand, as a solo artist of musical platitudes. Now that the one-zeroes have hit, Calvin is busy preparing a new album for the new decade."

On Saturday morning 6/29 from 9-noon, Yardsale-A-Go-Go will broadast a special interview with author Dean Swinford. His new novel, Death Metal Epic (The Inverted Katabasis #1), was recently published by ATLATL Press. Swinford, an assistant professor of English at Fayetteville State University, is a south Florida native and longtime metal head.
We will discuss topics ranging from: his new novel; medieval neoplatonism and metal's esoteric thematics; corpsepaint and the poetic technique of prosopopoeia; and the complexities of metal fandom.
