With this self-titled, second solo album in English and Spanish, Alex edges closer to the commercial mainstream without caving to the conventional formulas of Miami Latin pop. The long-time Canadian resident first recorded traditional Cuban music with his fraternal twin brother, salsa singer Adonis Puentes. Their father was a guitar teacher in Cuba, so music runs deep in the Puentes household.
A powerhouse songwriter, Alex' latest CD is alive with diverse influences from Stevie Wonder to Stevie Ray Vaughan, the Doobie Brothers to Los Lobos. Pure vocal and guitar ballad "Solo Tu" will rope in even the disenchanted, and the more uptempo tracks can take the form of bouncey reggae, driving pop or sophisticated, grown-up rock. With his iconic 'fro, arching sideburns, silver high-tops and velvet jackets, you might take him for a pop dandy, but Alex possesses the true gifts of the troubadour: melodic invention, an authentic voice, and an unyielding drive to connect.
