NOW PLAYING:

Sacred Steel Guitar music live tonight on The Bull City Cosmic Hoedown"

Mt. Airy, NC's own Sacred Steel Guitar gospel group "DaShawn Hickman and Steel Moven" will be playing live on your radio tonight (Tues) around 7pm on  "The Bull City Cosmic Hoedown" here on WXDU.

They will also be playing Saturday June 12 at 9:30pm, at Papa Mojo's Roadhouse in Durham.

This is music from a tradition in the House of God church that uses the pedal steel guitar or lap steel as the central instrument during the worship service.  The steel's sliding and crying sounds are used to mimic the human voice singing and shouting.  The music can range from slow pretty songs to wild over-the-top, get-up-out-of-your-pew-and-dance numbers...  If you've seen or heard music from The Campbell Brothers or The Lee Boys, then you know this music.
DaShawn and his cousins grew up learning this music in their church and have played for their congregation since grade-school. The group plays pedal steel, keyboards, bass and drums.  In years past, they've not played outside of the church very often, except for a brief stint playing some festivals -- however they are now starting to play out again some, so please come out and support this music on Saturday night in Durham at Papa Mojo's.     http://www.papamojosroadhouse.com/papa-mojos-roadhouse-calendar.htm
