WXDU's Mission
WXDU, as a member of the Duke University Union, exists to inform, educate, and entertain both the students of Duke University and the surrounding community of Durham through quality progressive alternative radio programming. WXDU seeks to give its staff the freedom to pursue their personal aesthetic within the framework of a cohesive format. WXDU aims to provide the listener with an alternative viewpoint untainted by commercial interests. WXDU resolves to maintain good relations with the music industry without compromising its integrity and nationally recognized commitment to quality programming. WXDU resolves to remain a laboratory where all members are free to make and learn from their mistakes.

"Out There A Minute" on Sunday 4/17, 10 a.m. - noon

The playlist for the “Out There a Minute” jazz program on Sunday 4/17, 10 a.m. until noon, will take as its point of departure the song “Woke Up This Morning”, from the 1997 album, Exile on Cold Harbour Lane, by Alabama 3.  You may have heard an abbreviated version as the theme song for the popular drama series “The Sopranos”.

 

The spoken word opening of the song (excised from the version used for “The Sopranos”) includes references to nearly a dozen jazz or blues composers, musicians or singers:  Charles Mingus and the album Pithecanthropus Erectus; J. R. Monterose; Jackie McLean; Eric Dolphy; John Coltrane; Duke Ellington; Lester Young; Billie Holiday; Ella Fitzgerald; Jimmy Reed; Muddy Waters; and Howlin’ Wolf.

 

The playlist for the 4/17 program will mix music by persons named in the spoken word opening of “Woke Up This Morning” with music associated with those persons named in the lyric, but performed by someone else.  Over the course of the program, you will hear jazz and blues material from or performed by Charles Mingus, Jackie McLean, J. R. Montrose, Frank Zappa, Eric Dolphy, John McLaughlin, Carlos Santana, Duke Ellington, John Coltrane, Tony Bennett, Benny Green, Shamalamacord (a duo consisting of a Japanese shamisen and an accordian), Lester Young, Billie Holiday, Salif Keita, The Fine Young Cannibals, Cole Porter, Jimmy Reed, Dion, The Muddy Waters Tribute Band, David Gogo, Howlin’ Wolf, The Persuasions, Madlib, Bill Frisell, and Gunther Schuller.  Marc Ribot will have the sign off song.
