WXDU News, Sports, and Information Sunday (2/1) 6:00-8:00 p.m.

The Endless Frontier airs tonight at 6:00. On tonight’s show, the hosts will take a look at gender and academia. They’ll discuss a recent study that shows an inverse correlation between the level of genius perceived as a requirement for success in an academic field and the number of women who work in that field. They’ll also cover a new rabies virus treatment.

WXDU News is next at 6:30. On tonight’s show:

  • MRSA, which can cause a rare and life-threatening antibiotic resistant infection, poses a significant public health risk. But as Science Update’s Bob Hirshon explains, researchers are developing a vaccine to prevent infection.
  • New farming methods in the African country of Malawi are helping women develop independence while preserving the environment. Deutsche Welle’s George Mahungral has more.
  • Both sides of the gun debate focus on other people: those who are for gun ownership argue they should be able to protect themselves from attackers, and those who advocate for stricter gun control want to prevent gun crimes. But what about the impact of gun ownership on the individual? With Good Reason’s Allison Quantz explores what guns mean for suicide rates.
  • Ocean acidification, severe weather, drought and a recent report that suggests the sea level on North Carolina’s coast is rising faster than expected. These are just some of the impacts of global climate change. And Isla Earth shares another: a decrease in the lion population.
  • Weather for the week ahead.
  • Recent police shootings and responses to subsequent protests have reenergized a national discourse on police force and officer behavior. Crosscurrents visits an annual law enforcement training seminar and talks to opponents, who say the meeting only serves to further militarize the police.

Finally, we’ll have WXDU Sports at 7:00. Martin Kang will focus on Duke women’s basketball tonight. He’ll also discuss the men’s team and their national coverage last week. Then he’ll have a recap of the NCCU men’s and women’s recent performances. Finally, Martin will talk to Jimmy Jack Funk, Jr., current G.O.U.G.E. Wrestling heavyweight champion. G.O.U.G.E. will return to Durham for the 2015 Redneck Rumble next Sunday, February 8, at Motorco.
