"Based in Olympia, Wash., Calvin Johnson‘s work in underground culture started as a teenage fan volunteering at the local community radio station, KAOS-FM. He moved on to writing for fanzines, organizing music and film events, playing music in various ill-fated bands. Calvin established K, a locally oriented media outlet, in 1982.
In 1993 Calvin founded Dub Narcotic Studio in which he has documented the work of the Somehow Is and Never Was, such as Mirah, the Blow, Versus, Built to Spill, Fitz of Depression, Make-Up and Little Wings. It has also been the incubator of many Calvin experiments in collaboration and self-expression, such as Beat Happening, Halo Benders, Dub Narcotic Sound System, and Selector Dub Narcotic.
The decade of the double zeroes saw Calvin Johnson set into the world, acoustic guitar in hand, as a solo artist of musical platitudes. Now that the one-zeroes have hit, Calvin is busy preparing a new album for the new decade."

Funk Disco Dance Friday on September 13th from 6-8 pm will feature Funk/Soul Divas: women of early 70s funk like Marva Whitney, Lyn Collins, Betty Davis and Ann Sexton, plus new artists like Sharon Jones and Alice Russell. In the first hour we'll also talk with Kirsten Sherk of Ipas about Retro Rock for Reproductive Rights, a benefit concert Saturday night featuring funk artists Yo Mama's Big Fat Booty Band. We'll hear new music from the Booty Band's upcoming album Onward! and talk about Ipas's work promoting access to reproductive health care.
Three Lobed Recordings and Duke's WXDU are once again teaming up for one heck of a free day show during the Hopscotch Music Festival. Our festivities will go down at the ever-rad King's Barcade from noon to 5:30pm on Friday, September 6th. We have worked hard to assemble a lineup of performances that are unique to this show - be it performers who are not making other appearances at the festival or special collaborations. As with every prior Three Lobed day show, this year's day show will feature a debut collaboration (2011 - the world premiere live collaboration of William Tyler and James Toth on "Tennessee Blues" -- 2012 the North American debut of the BOC trio, Alan Bishop, Bill Orcutt and Chris Corsano). If you're into free / avant / psych / out / other music, this is where you're going to want to be. If you can't make it, WXDU will be simulcasting the show and exclusive artist interviews (featuring a live feed by Jonas Blank ofNYCTaper). There will be *tons* of merch on hand, including some oddball titles, from all of the involved performers. Be ready.
That's right, everyone's favorite Triad-based channeler of the Stooges & T Rex will be stopping by the station to Sing and Play His Songs. 4:00 p.m. & don't miss it!
On Sunday, August 25th, WXDU's interview show, I Liked You Better Before You Sold Out, we will be having our annual Hopscotch Preview Show, featuring Greg Lowenhagen, Hopscotch director, and Grayson Currin, music editor of the Independent Weekly. We'll discuss this year's festival, including schedule, lineup, activities, highlights of last year's Hopscotch and more. Tune in at 6 - 7 pm!
The dynamite Chapel Hill band Midnight Plus One, who just released their self-titled debut album, will be joining us for a live in-studio set this Sunday afternoon, July 28, at 4:00 p.m. Tune in over-the-air at good ol' 88.7 FM, or online right here at wxdu.org!
